Unfortunately, there isn't a good way to detect that one wants pbuilder
from the script name while preserving backward compatibility. I really
should have renamed the script to git-cowbuilder when I changed it over to
use cowbuilder. But I did incorporate this so that if you set BUILDER to
pbuilder in the environment, it will use pbuilder with that logic for
determining the basetgz file.
This is in git-pbuilder 1.25, which is now available from my scripts page:

I also fixed a few other problems that prevented BUILDER from behing
honored properly.
