Package: mysql-common
Version: 5.0.12beta-2

I'm running the etch version of Debian. My current server package is: mysql-server 4.0.24-10 The problem I'm reporting now dates back to the replacement of 'woody' by 'sarge' and the creation of the 'new' testing version 'etch'. Until then, the mysql daemon was starting correctly at system startup, but, after a package upgraded it didn't start anymore. Now I've had a look to the syslog and mysqld complains about 'old_passwords=1' being an unknown variable. Then I've edited my.cnf file. The file states that old_passwords is mainteined for compatibility to other Debian packages that still use libmysqlclient10 and libmysqlclient12.

I've commented out the line 'old_passwords = 1' in my.cnf and the server is now starting correctly... however, I don't know any possible side effects. In my system, libmysqlclient14 version 4.1.11a-4 is installed, and mysql admin, and mysql query browser are working. But I have also installed versions of libmysqlclient10 and libmysqlclient12, and I don't know if some package is using those packages.

For your reference.

Regards,
Damián
