        I'd suggest s/the extension '\.db'/the '.db' suffix/.

        I'm curious, however, whether it's pam_userdb(8) or the Berkley
        DB implementation that adds the suffix?  If the latter is the
        case, I'd rather state it explicitly, like:

    Please note that the ".db" suffix will be added to the filename
    specified here by the Berkley DB implementation.
