Thanks for the workaround. I think this was my fault - I found I'd installed a custom /etc/mediawiki/LocalSettings.php to do Drupal-style selection of settings based on the domain/URL being accessed (this would be a useful addition to the Debian package, incidentally - makes hosting multiple wikis off one mediawiki install on different virtual hosts very easy). This script was not compatible with the update.php script. Anyway, all fixed now, sorry for troubling you and thanks for the help!
