The problem seems to depend on the downloaded data: I get this problem most of the time, but not always; but when the problem is there, just doing another apt-get update immediately will certainly fail, and if it isn't there, doing another apt-get update immediately will certainly work. Doing an apt-get clean doesn't help: > apt-get clean > apt-get update Hit http://ftp.de.debian.org unstable InRelease Hit http://ftp.de.debian.org experimental InRelease Hit http://ftp.de.debian.org unstable/main Sources/DiffIndex Hit http://ftp.de.debian.org unstable/main amd64 Packages/DiffIndex Hit http://ftp.de.debian.org unstable/contrib amd64 Packages/DiffIndex Hit http://ftp.de.debian.org unstable/non-free amd64 Packages/DiffIndex Ign http://ftp.de.debian.org unstable/contrib TranslationIndex Hit http://ftp.de.debian.org unstable/main TranslationIndex Ign http://ftp.de.debian.org unstable/non-free TranslationIndex Hit http://ftp.de.debian.org experimental/main Sources/DiffIndex Hit http://ftp.de.debian.org experimental/main amd64 Packages/DiffIndex Ign http://ftp.de.debian.org experimental/main TranslationIndex Get:1 http://ftp.de.debian.org unstable/main 2012-01-21-0227.10.pdiff [22.4 kB] Get:2 http://ftp.de.debian.org unstable/main amd64 2012-01-21-0227.10.pdiff [30.3 kB] Get:3 http://ftp.de.debian.org unstable/main 2012-01-21-0227.10.pdiff [22.4 kB] E: Method rred has died unexpectedly!
