I've no intention to diverge from upstream on this, maintaining a different interface to upstream doesn't seem like a smart move. Given that the TeX upstream appears to have already changed their code for the new zlib upstream it seems like they're not expecting any change in zlib and will be updated to use the new interface with their next release. I can add a Breaks to the package to help handle partial upgrade cases.
