I've done a little more testing. Interestingly, the bug does not trigger
until actually connecting to a server. E.g., I can follow the procedure
above, start irssi via "irssi -!" to disable connecting to channels,
type special characters, detach and re-attach the screen session, still
be able to type special characters, and finally connect to a server
(without detaching or re-attaching the screen session), whereupon
special character input becomes broken.
