Another small improvement is the cron.d should run as sphinxsearch too. For the indexer --rotate in cron to work it needs to send a signal to the searchd process and therefore the indexer needs to be able to read the pid file. In the init script chmod or chown the pid file such that the sphinxsearch user can read this file.
