I guess there's something I've missed in the thread. Do you confirm the wish is to be able to work with modules not installed in the default library paths?

If so, why not simply doing:

export PYTHONPATH=/my/patched/python/modules
dblatex ...

Or:

PYTHONPATH=/my/patched/python/modules dblatex ...

?
