Package: ftp.debian.org Severity: serious The 'setserial' package remains problematic on many systems. In the worst cases, having the package installed with the default debconf choice taken will cause a hard system crash on boot. There seems to be general agreement that this package, while still useful on some systems in some cases, is no longer an appropriate package to have as part of Debian's 'base' install.
Please downgrade the priority of setserial from 'important' to 'extra'. I would accept 'optional', but the "it can crash your system if you don't know what you're doing" aspect makes me suggest 'extra' as more appropriate. A change to a priority lower than 'standard' is release-critical for sarge. As supporting evidence for this request, I offer the changelog of debootstrap version 0.2.41, and the message thread it references attached to bug #212646. The change in debootstrap was necessary but not sufficient to solve the problem, as 'important' priority causes tasksel, et al, to install setserial. We *must* fix this for sarge release! Please also move the setserial package from 'base' to 'comm'. This is not absolutely required, but once the priority is lowered it would be less confusing to our users if setserial were no longer part of the 'base' section.
