Can you please repeat parts of this: $ cd /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/auctex/ $ su # /usr/bin/emacs21 -q -no-site-file -l lpath.el and *now* do again M-x locate-library RET tex RET This should give /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/auctex/tex.el And also please send - the output of "ls /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/auctex/" - the contents of /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/auctex/tex.el (if it exists).
