Confirmed here.

I cleaned out everything, until 'dpkg -l' did show no more 'nvidia', rebooted, and followed the detailed description in
http://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers

Now I have the self-compiled nvidia-kernel-legacy-2.6.18-4-k7 on the same level as the nvidia-glx-legacy from m-a update - m-a prepare - m-a auto-install nvidia-kernel-legacy-source.
Then I did apt-get install nvidia-glx-legacy.
Alas, the same result of a fatal server crash.
I also installed the nvidia-kernel-legacy-2.6.18-k7 through apt-get; with the same result.

Last resort: I ran Xorg with the XF86Config with which Sarge had been working properly, and hit the same snag.

The backtrace here is:

...
(II) Initializing built-in extension XEVIE
(II) Initializing extension GLX

Backtrace:
0: /usr/bin/X11/X(xf86SigHandler+0x84) [0x80c4354]
1: [0xb7f0a420]
2: /usr/bin/X11/X(main+0x2aa) [0x806e4ba]

4: /usr/bin/X11/X(FontFileCompleteXLFD+0xa9) [0x806d9d1]

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting

It does run with 'nv', but I need the TV out.
