argh. I noticed that I did not have /dev/cpu/microcode (support for it
was missing in the kernel). Now I've enabled support for it in the
kernel (overwriting the old one) and reinstalled the package without
seeing any error:

Selecting previously deselected package microcode.ctl.
(Reading database ... 421141 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking microcode.ctl (from .../microcode.ctl_1.17-1_i386.deb) ...
Setting up microcode.ctl (1.17-1) ...
No need to download a new microcode
