AFAIK gettext can handle big endian mo files on little endian machines and vice versa. I've never had any problem with that. If gettext wasn't able to handle that, the mo files should really be under /usr/lib and not /usr/share and that would have been fixed long ago already. I guess you're raising a non-issue.
