Before closing or archiving this bug I think you should consider this. I recently downloaded the Debian 4.0r1 businesscard cd to make a fresh install of the testing distribution with the kernel linux-image-2.6.22-2-686. Every seemed okay until after reboot when it stopped at the following:
Begin: Waiting for root file system... Done. <---(It took like 3 minutes to show this) WARNING boot device may be renamed. Try root = /dev/sda1 ALERT! /dev/hda1 does not exist. Dropping to a shell! Check your root= boot argument (cat /proc/cmdline) Check for missing modules (cat /proc/modules), or device files (ls /dev) BusyBox v1.1.3(Debian 1:1.1.3-5) Built in shell (ash) Enter help (...) /bin/sh : can't access tty; job control turned off (initramfs) Being frustrated by this I decided to use a Debian 4.0r0 netinst cd I have and install a stable distribution base system choosing the kernel linux-image-2.6.18-4-686. It booted ok. Afterwards, I changed the /etc/apt/sources.list to point to testing, # aptitude update, # aptitude dist-upgrade and voilá; testing distribution. I then used the linux-image-686 virtual package to upgrade the kernel and rebooted; and it showed me the same warning as described before. I googled for this and found a post in a polish forum http://debian.linux.pl/viewtopic.php?t=4889 (can't read polish) and this post http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?p=94825&; with no hints or ideas.
