re-running the command manually with -lXrender added seemed to succeed but
I have no idea how to integrate this into the build system.

I tried applying the patch from that bug report (a dpatch version of it
is attatched) but I got the following error when trying to regenerate
configure.

build/autoconf/altoptions.m4:156: the top level

Googling for the error seemed to suggest that to get arround it I needed
to use a pre-sarge version of autoconf which seemed rather impractical.
