Upon "up"grade to 8.44.3, my X server no longer knows about the proper
resolutions of my screen.

/etc/X11/xorg.conf has the following for each depth:
        Modes "1920x1440" "1920x1200" "1856x1392" "1792x1344"
"1680x1050" "1600x1200" "1440x900" "1400x1050" "1280x1024" "1280x960"
"1280x854" "1280x800" "1280x768" "1200x800" "1152x864" "1152x768" "1024x768"
"800x600" "640x480"

My actual display (on a Dell Inspiron E 1505) is 1680x1050. But I'm getting
1280x1024 resolution.

The Xorg.0.log shows that the following is advertised by the monitor:

(II) fglrx(0): Supported additional Video Mode:
(II) fglrx(0): clock: 122.0 MHz Image Size: 331 x 207 mm
(II) fglrx(0): h_active: 1680 h_sync: 1712 h_sync_end 1776 h_blank_end 1904
h_border: 0
(II) fglrx(0): v_active: 1050 v_sync: 1051 v_sync_end 1054 v_blanking: 1066
v_border: 0

Which is correct.

But then a bit later we see:

(II) fglrx(0): Total of 13 modes found for primary display.

Which is interesting, for there are nineteen modes in the Modes line in
xorg.conf, and worse yet, the modes that it proceeds to examine are not
all from xorg.conf. It has apparently decided to go ahead and ignore my
configuration file. The modes it examines are:

1280x1024, 1152x864, 1024x768, 800x600, 640x480, 1280x72, 720x480,
640x432, 512x384, 400x300, 320x240, and 320x200. Note that my
configuration file does not list many of these.

This is a massive lose. It is clear that the mode line in the
configuration file is simply being entirely ignored, and a new one
substituted.

This is not at all ready for the unstable distribution, and belongs in
experimental. The ChangeLog suggests that you uploaded this *knowing*
it would have this bug, which makes it essentially useless on any modern
hardware.
