I will close this within a day or two.
It is not my responsibility to make sure xvfb is not broken.
The build is run via the script
/usr/share/R/debian/r-cran.mk
from the r-base-dev package --- and is executed in an _identical_ manner
across several dozen packages requiring xvfb.
No bug in my package. The autobuilders fail repeatedly on other arches too;
this just works on x86 pbuilder.

| About the archive rebuild: The rebuild was done on about 50 AMD64 nodes
| of the Grid'5000 platform, using a clean chroot containing a sid
| environment. Internet was not accessible from the build systems.
