Should be related to the widescreen issue, but it's hard to tell regarding the 
closed-source nature of the driver.

Also upstream report those issues:

Linux may result in a maximum display resolution of 1280x1024 only being 
available 
 > Custom mode lines in xorg.conf may be ignored by the fglrx driver
