Strange - Mahara installs a virtualhost configuration so shouldn't do this. What is in /etc/mahara/servername.conf? That's managed by debconf, you should have been asked a question for the value to put in there. Furthermore, you are fully encouraged to edit the apache configuration file to suit your server.
