a) It actually is only required, and not essential:

        [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~> apt-cache show mawk | head -2
        Package: mawk
        Priority: required
        [...]

b) I actually made exactly the same argument, but it was pointed out to me
that essential != build-essential. So I gave up arguing the issue and made
this change.
