A very similar problem has just been reported on the ArgyllCMS mailing-list[1]. The reporter there seems to think there might be a correlation with the NVidia proprietary drivers. Do you also use them? It might help track down the bug if you can confirm that you are; and if you're not, then it's probably something else.
