Package: grub-pc Version: 1.96+20090808-1 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable
This bug renders the system unusable. I don't know why it does this on one box but not the other, but it has set root=(MASS1-usr) at the top of grub.cfg. That is my /usr, not my /boot. Moreover, which disk is sda and which is sdb varies at each boot as of 2.6.30, and the grub packages do not appear to deal well with this. -- Package-specific info: *********************** BEGIN /proc/mounts /dev/mapper/MASS1-root / xfs rw,noatime,noquota 0 0 /dev/mapper/MASS1-usr /usr xfs rw,noatime,noquota 0 0 /dev/mapper/MASS1-var /var xfs rw,noatime,noquota 0 0 /dev/sdb2 /winxp ntfs ro,relatime,uid=0,gid=0,umask=0222,nls=utf8,errors=continue,mft_zone_multiplier=1 0 0 /dev/mapper/crypt-home /home xfs rw,noatime,noquota 0 0 /dev/mapper/MASS1-home--nocrypt /home/jgoerzen/nocrypt xfs rw,noatime,noquota 0 0 /dev/sdb5 /boot ext2 rw,relatime,errors=continue 0 0 *********************** END /proc/mounts *********************** BEGIN /boot/grub/device.map (fd0) /dev/fd0 (hd1) /dev/sda (hd0) /dev/sdb *********************** END /boot/grub/device.map *********************** BEGIN /boot/grub/grub.cfg # # DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE # # It is automatically generated by /usr/sbin/grub-mkconfig using templates # from /etc/grub.d and settings from /etc/default/grub # ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/00_header ### set default=0 set timeout=5 insmod lvm set root=(MASS1-usr) search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 93dbb209-9a1a-497d-b422-262db2de59b1 if loadfont /share/grub/unicode.pf2 ; then set gfxmode=640x480 insmod gfxterm insmod vbe if terminal_output.gfxterm ; then true ; else # For backward compatibility with versions of terminal.mod that don't # understand terminal_output terminal gfxterm fi fi ### END /etc/grub.d/00_header ### ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme ### set root=(hd0,5) search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 76bba175-64cf-4c7a-869e-ada953ebc387 insmod png if background_image /grub/moreblue-orbit-grub.png ; then set color_normal=black/black set color_highlight=magenta/black else set menu_color_normal=cyan/blue set menu_color_highlight=white/blue fi ### END /etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme ### ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/10_linux ### menuentry "Debian GNU/Linux, Linux 2.6.30-1-686" { set root=(hd0,5) search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 76bba175-64cf-4c7a-869e-ada953ebc387 linux /vmlinuz-2.6.30-1-686 root=/dev/mapper/MASS1-root ro initrd /initrd.img-2.6.30-1-686 } menuentry "Debian GNU/Linux, Linux 2.6.30-1-686 (recovery mode)" { set root=(hd0,5) search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 76bba175-64cf-4c7a-869e-ada953ebc387 linux /vmlinuz-2.6.30-1-686 root=/dev/mapper/MASS1-root ro single initrd /initrd.img-2.6.30-1-686 } menuentry "Debian GNU/Linux, Linux 2.6.29-2-686" { set root=(hd0,5) search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 76bba175-64cf-4c7a-869e-ada953ebc387 linux /vmlinuz-2.6.29-2-686 root=/dev/mapper/MASS1-root ro initrd /initrd.img-2.6.29-2-686 } menuentry "Debian GNU/Linux, Linux 2.6.29-2-686 (recovery mode)" { set root=(hd0,5) search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 76bba175-64cf-4c7a-869e-ada953ebc387 linux /vmlinuz-2.6.29-2-686 root=/dev/mapper/MASS1-root ro single initrd /initrd.img-2.6.29-2-686 } menuentry "Debian GNU/Linux, Linux 2.6.26-1-686" { set root=(hd0,5) search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 76bba175-64cf-4c7a-869e-ada953ebc387 linux /vmlinuz-2.6.26-1-686 root=/dev/mapper/MASS1-root ro initrd /initrd.img-2.6.26-1-686 } menuentry "Debian GNU/Linux, Linux 2.6.26-1-686 (recovery mode)" { set root=(hd0,5) search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 76bba175-64cf-4c7a-869e-ada953ebc387 linux /vmlinuz-2.6.26-1-686 root=/dev/mapper/MASS1-root ro single initrd /initrd.img-2.6.26-1-686 } ### END /etc/grub.d/10_linux ### ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober ### menuentry "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (on /dev/sdb2)" { set root=(hd0,2) search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set ce6866696866506f drivemap -s (hd0) ${root} chainloader +1 } ### END /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober ### ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/40_custom ### # This file is an example on how to add custom entries ### END /etc/grub.d/40_custom ### *********************** END /boot/grub/grub.cfg -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (99, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.30-1-686 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages grub-pc depends on: ii debconf [debconf-2.0] 1.5.27 Debian configuration management sy ii grub-common 1.96+20090808-1 GRand Unified Bootloader, version ii libc6 2.9-24 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii ucf 3.0018 Update Configuration File: preserv grub-pc recommends no packages.
