Ok. Sorry if I was a bit too blunt. So this seems to be a regression in our code, and not necessarily related with graphics (it could still be, since GRUB attempts to setup video mode, even if it's unsuccesful). Do you know how to run a regression test? You can do that e.g. with svn-bisect, but it's a bit tricky since you'll need to match up each upstream snapshot with the corresponding debian/ dir of the same date.
