I have no idea how, or how I missed it, but apparently the result of
apt-get source wordnet was a corrupted tarball on my end. Probably some
transient network failure. I should have looked at the unpacked
directory rather than just blindly firing off sbuild.

After refetching, wordnet_3.0-18 now build fine in my
current-as-of-yesterday-evening chroot using sbuild.
