Package: upgrade-reports Severity: critical Justification: breaks the whole system
I acquired and and used the 5.03 Lenny UPDATES DVD ISO image, as I have a slow-ish broadband link and have been delaying network security updates. I upgraded using aptitude safe-upgrade 186 packages were to be upgraded It appeared to go OK. I continued to use the system for another hour without any issues At next reboot, I had a GRUB error where it could not boot the kernel. After rebooting using a rescue CD I eventually discovered that the upgrade process had modified the GRUB menu.lst file and transposed the partition number of my /boot partition, and thus the system could not boot. I checked the list of packages upgraded, and grub was not one of them. So one of the other packages installed must have called grub-upate, possibly the kernel. Note I am using a rebuilt kernel not the stock kernel, but any kernel I tried failed, obviously because hte hd reference was incorrect. Problem resolved by restoring a backup of menu.lst The following extract is from the original grub menu.lst file: root (hd0,0) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.26-1-amd64-amm-preempt-cx88 root=/dev/mapper/sys-lenny1 ro The following extract is from the incorrectly modified menu.lst file, which rendered the system unbootable root (hd0,1) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.26-1-amd64-amm-preempt-cx88 root=/dev/mapper/system-lenny ro I also noted that the LVM volume group name was incorrectly changed as well I dont know whether this is a bug against grub, or the package(s) that updated grub?
