hmm, surfraw itself won't generate that message, it is probably failing to invoke a browser correctly and the browser is giving that message. Is it the same with all elvi? Do you have any environment variables starting with XDG (eg $XDG_CONFIG_DIRS)? Can you run a failing elvi directly with sh -x, and post the output.
