The buttons in the KDM theme do not work with kdm version 4:4.3.4-3. The login button (id=login_button) and the menu button (id=system_button). They worked with kdm version 4:3.5.9.dfsg.1-6. One can still log in using [enter] to submit the login information, but it is impossible to switch session type and request a reboot using the mouse. See #570369 for more information on related issues with kdm in Lenny and Squeeze. I suspect the button handling changed in kdm, but have not been able to find any list of changes. The kdm theme format for Squeeze is documented in <URL: http://docs.kde.org/stable/en/kdebase-workspace/kdm/kdm-themes.html >. It might be possible and a good idea to create a theme that work with both gdm and kdm, to get the same view independent of which display manager is used.
