Okay, I've given this some thought, this is my idea for now: glew 1.5 introduces new openGL calls that are detected (some call used in iV_DrawTextRotated ?). Your graphics card claims to support this call, soo GLEW now gives the program the green light to use it. If now that call is actually buggy in the graphics driver, you get a crash. This makes me think that this is an issue with the graphics driver. The reason I don't see it is that my card perhaps doesn't support that particular call. What do you think?
