So you're using a backported package from somewhere? Could you please
retry with the packages from testing or experimental?

I will try. I am always nervous about mixing repositories though. Not sure about how to force a package without blowing half the stuff that depends on it out of the water. The base plugins package seems to be necessary for about half of what I have installed.

Ok. I tried. It said I already had the latest package.

Oh I seem to have completely broken everything now.

I cant install gstreamer-plugins base any more, because it needs libgstreamer, but those say ther cant be more up to date than they are.

apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-base

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies.
gstreamer0.10-plugins-base: Depends: libgstreamer-plugins-base0.10-0 (>= 0.10.19) but it is not going to be installed Depends: libgstreamer0.10-0 (>= 0.10.18) but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages

So basically I may not be able to say much more,. since I now have a pretty broken computer.

Any ideas on how to restore it to a stable state would be most welcomed. :-(

Reinstall the whole desktop?

Do you not maintain the backports.debian plugin as well??

That's where the problem is...

Also, do you have a GStreamer installation in /usr/local for example?

No. I have not tried to be clever with gstreamer. I try to keep to a 'stable with backports latest' setup. gstreamer is mainly the backports stuff.

Had to go to that (go backports) to get solid video performance on Intel onboard chipset..the later kernels and drivers are better, though still have some issues.

Something is really broken for you :(
That's why we are here. yes ;-)
And its broken because using backports didn't work for me for the gstreamer subsystem.
With respect,. that's not my FAULT, though it is definitely my PROBLEM :-)
