This does not leave dpkg in an inconsistent state, it only leaves the slapd
package in an unconfigured state. This is quite deliberate - you can choose
to skip the automatic configuration of slapd, but in that case you still
need to manually configure it before the package can be considered
"installed". The package should not be marked as "installed" when slapd is
not in a startable state.
To finish installation of the package after you have manually configured
your directories, you just need to run 'dpkg --configure -a'.
