Thanks. I've reviewed the freshclam postinst and don't see how it can cause a problem like this. Can you sudo dpkg-reconfigure clamav-freshclam and when you get to the related questions, carefully check and see if there's any whitespace in the debconf window. If so, please remove it and see if that solves the problem.
