Since it looks that you are using startx with a custom .xinitrc, you need to launch the DBus session by adding the following line to your ~/.xinitrc: eval `dbus-launch --exit-with-session --sh-syntax` Then flush will start without complaining. Also note that flush typically starts with only an icon in the notification area, but no window.
