But no single kernel package is essential, nor is it necessary to have *any* kernel package installed inside a chroot, container or certain virtual machine configurations. Neither is initramfs-tools essential, since you can also use dracut (or a custom kernel with no initramfs). You will have seen a warning that you're about to remove the running kernel, with the default response being to abort the removal. If you went ahead, that is your mistake and not a bug.
