Hula doesn't need zlib, so it certainly shouldn't Build-Depend on it. Something, then, is adding in this zlib flag incorrectly - it sounds a bit like bug#337873, but that is fixed as far as I know. Would it be possible for you to have a look at the various .pc files on your system, and see which is requiring -lz?
