I'm very surprised by this happening with gdm3 too, I'd probably need more details to be able to reproduce it. In your environment, does xprop -root | grep SPI show an AT_SPI_BUS variable? Are at-spi-bus-launcher and at-spi2-registryd running under your identity? I guess the at-spi2-core package is installed?
