Right now I am unable to replicate it.
Could you do me two quick favours?
(1) Run stopmotion under strace, so we can see what actual system call
and arguments are causing the failure.
(2) Run it with your locale set to C, to check if the issue is
locale-related.

In the meantime, I'm going to lower the severity to "normal" because
this looks like a normal bug, not something that will allow martian crab
people to hack into your computer and steal your banking credential or
whatever. But that's just a technical definition; this does not mean I
consider fixing it any less important.
