It much rather seems like disk or RAM corruption (which can actually causes the whole computer to crash). Much more likely it is a graphics card freeze, as you said that the disk was still working and the packages got installed eventually. Please try to reproduce this issue on a text console (Ctrl+Alt+F1) and see what it does there. If the kernel itself is still working, just the display is frozen, you should also be able to install openssh-server, log in through ssh, and fetch dmesg and the journal as Michael asked for.
