Perhaps it's a systemd issue because after qemu-kvm session was killed systemd still had a unit hanging about for it that prevented me from restarting the vm until I rebooted the host. I did verify that no qemu/kvm was running after. Aside from that I have no 'special' steps to reproduce other than that I had libvirt-bin and a guest running, did an upgrade and discovered by guest was gone and I couldn't restart it.
