I'm thinking that this should probably be resolved (as with #804299) by
removing the drivedb update feature from the Debian package and performing
drivedb updates via update Debian packages. I'm not yet sure whether it's
worth splitting the drivedb out of the main smartmontools package; I need
to think whether that would make backporting easier. I'm interested in any
others opinions on the issue (I guess follow-ups to #804299 would be most
appropriate).
