As I mentioned in a previous email, #349550 was really caused by R itself,
exposed only by one Debian release and had been fixed within 24 hours (see
below for copied changelog entry from r-base).

So this can be closed. Someone with more time on their hands could reopen,
merge with #349637 and close.
