Unfortunately, this leads to the problem now reported by dpkg-source. A possible fix is having a backup of the orig.tar.gz shipped gmo files and copying them back in "clean". Yes, an ugly fix, but for a broken design (gettext generated gmo files) anyway. Repackaging the orig.tar.gz doesn't seem to be reasonable here.
