I'll comment only on this: a transition is something possibly longish,
and from what you wrote in #879845 it surely seems like it could be in
this case.
It wouldn't be bad to fix this bug in unstable before, given also the
smaller impact it would have. Hugh surely must have a reason for
wanting to the length of doing a NMU for this bug that has affected
unstable (and even stable! but the version tracking of the 3 relevant
bugs were screwed and it wasn't clear until I merged them up…) for quite
some time.
