I shall have a look at the maintainer script, indeed.

However, have you checked whether the upgrade does work? I did it.

The version << 4.3 relied on the bad trick (declaring explicitely the
Python3 compilation), because there was no real python3-<package>, this
package was only Provide(d), which was probably a bad practice, but
worked, since the code was compatible with both Python2 and Python3.

Since version 4.4, as quite all the computers of end-users have
distributions with Python3, we (upstream developers and I) decided to
switch definitely to Python3, so python-expeyes is no longer provided,
and replaced by pyhon3-expeyes, which becomes a plain package. When a
Conflict is declared against the version << 4.4, the old postrm script
is run and there is no interaction between the package from Stretch and
the new package from Buster.
