Could you please share your `locale' settings? Does a file with this name exist in the current directory? Is it possible to create a file with this name? (I'm guessing you have everything configured for UTF-8 and thus a lone 0xE4 is an incomplete multibyte sequence.) -- If this were a real .signature, it would suck less. Well, maybe not.
