The basic issue here is that xdm is missing a Pre-Depends: on x11-common (>= 1:7.0.0) which is required because it installs files to /usr/lib/X11, and /usr/lib/X11 is a symlink up until that version. This is unfortunately going to be quite a mess to fix, now that this version of xdm has reached testing, *because* installing this version of x11-common will cause dpkg to lose track of xdm's files; I think the sanest way to handle this is for x11-common to bump its conflicts with xdm up to (<= 1:1.0.1-6) as well. Several of the issues you describe above do not strictly require the Pre-Depends in order to address them, but the Pre-Depends is necessary to fix *some* of the problems with this package and happens to also be sufficient for fixing the others. -- Steve Langasek Give me a lever long enough and a Free OS Debian Developer to set it on, and I can move the world.
