I tried $ sudo dpkg-reconfigure nvidia-kernel-dkms and it completed successfully. Trying to load the module afterwards failed with the same error though. /var/log/apt/history.log reveals that these were the packages I updated the day before the breakage occurred: Upgrade: libkrb5-3:amd64 (1.17-2, 1.17-3), libkrb5-3:i386 (1.17-2, 1.17-3), libgssapi-krb5-2:amd64 (1.17-2, 1.17-3), libgssapi-krb5-2:i386 (1.17-2, 1.17-3), krb5-multidev:amd64 (1.17-2, 1.17-3), libkrb5-dev:amd64 (1.17-2, 1.17-3), linux-libc-dev:amd64 (4.19.37-3, 4.19.37-4), linux-libc-dev:i386 (4.19.37-3, 4.19.37-4), *linux-image-4.19.0-5-amd64:amd64 (4.19.37-3, 4.19.37-4)*, libkdb5-9:amd64 (1.17-2, 1.17-3), libk5crypto3:amd64 (1.17-2, 1.17-3), libk5crypto3:i386 (1.17-2, 1.17-3), linux-compiler-gcc-8-x86:amd64 (4.19.37-3, 4.19.37-4), krb5-locales:amd64 (1.17-2, 1.17-3), libkadm5srv-mit11:amd64 (1.17-2, 1.17-3), libkrb5support0:amd64 (1.17-2, 1.17-3), libkrb5support0:i386 (1.17-2, 1.17-3), libgssrpc4:amd64 (1.17-2, 1.17-3), linux-headers-4.19.0-5-amd64:amd64 (4.19.37-3, 4.19.37-4), firefox:amd64 (67.0.2-1, 67.0.3-1), linux-kbuild-4.19:amd64 (4.19.37-3, 4.19.37-4), libkadm5clnt-mit11:amd64 (1.17-2, 1.17-3), linux-headers-4.19.0-5-common:amd64 (4.19.37-3, 4.19.37-4) The only package that seemed related to the bug was the new kernels. So I updated again today Upgrade: linux-image-4.19.0-5-amd64:amd64 (4.19.37-4, 4.19.37-5), firefox:amd64 (67.0.3-2, 67.0.4-1) I rebooted, and the NVIDIA module was loaded automatically without problems or needing further intervention. I can only assume the bug was actually with the new kernels. Either way, the bug is solved. Sorry for the inconvenience, it seems like nvidia-driver wasn't at fault at all.
