Probably because it runs out of RAM.  This is a 10k x 1500 jpeg, with
size .  Decompression and scaled will take their toll.

This isn't something that can be easily avoided; you might be
interested in comments to bug #313046 and #282405.

How much VRAM do you have (physical + swap space)?  Could you check
/var/log/kern.log for an OOM message?  If you have lots of vram, check
if this is fixed in firefox 1.5, now in the "testing" distribution.  I
could view the image using a 6 year old laptop.
