Hello guys, I am not sure if someone found the solution to this problem.
But it works for me, I am using Debian unstable, and I had the same problem,
I tried to reinstall xfig, fonts etc..., but didn't work, so after
searching seems that we need to do a "reset" of the font path that is
installed in the system, why?, mmm for me I had installed some fonts but
they were not recognized, so i did "xset -fp rehash" and works!!!(check
xfig README). I hope this solution works for you too.

Greatings,
Javier
