Thanks to the hint by Axel Beckert, I've managed to consistently reproduce the issue: # update-initramfs -u <first 3 lines including 'arm_64bit=1' disappear> # aptitude reinstall raspi-firmware <first 3 lines including 'arm_64bit=1' appear again> I still don't know whether the issue is in raspi-firmware or in initramfs- tools, but making it easy to reproduce should hopefully help solving it.
